Let's Grow Flax! Communally Grown Flax in Surrey & Hampshire

Flax is a plant-based fibre textile crop, that once spun and woven becomes linen, a beautiful sustainable fibre, with a rich history and a heritage in the UK.

In 2023 I initiated "Let’s Grow Flax", a local community flax growing project at the Surrey /Hampshire border, supported by Ginny a fellow local artisan and natural dyer.

30 local members have grown a small patch of fibre flax in their gardens, allotments and even flower pots, gaining hands-on experience of flax sowing, growing, harvesting, and retting.

The aim is to revive forgotten heritage skills, and connect communal growers to small scale industrial enterprises to have their crops processed - either in part (spinning) or in full (processing and spinning)

In 2024 we hope to have our communally grown flax spun by the amazing Fantasy Fibre Mill, to spin, naturally dye, weave, and create a bio regional linen cloth, and finger’s crossed, a garment!

We will soon post more updates about the project.  If you follow us on Instagram, you can also see what was going on during phase one of the project.
